Posted by Jeff Vilenski on September 22, 2014 at 4:45 PM Comments comments (0)

Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Essex will be coordinating sessions for Scouts interested in completing the Citizenship in the World merit badge.

They will lead discussions of the topics during Scout meetings (dates to be determined). Scouts are expected to prepare for these discussions, using the assigned topic schedule. Boys will need a Merit Badge booklet and the worksheets.

Note: there will be a limit to the number of boys participating for logistic reasons.

Interested boys, First Class and above, who wish to participate should contact Mrs. Essex (telephone 203-338-0023).

Boys are always able to complete this badge individually, should they not be able to participate in this session.

Wood Badge Volunteers Needed

Posted by Jeff Vilenski on September 15, 2014 at 8:30 PM Comments comments (0)

Dear Scouts and parents / guardians of Troop 88,

This year’s Wood Badge Course Staff is recruiting youth who are registered in the Connecticut Yankee Council programs of Boy Scouts, Ventures and Varsity Scouting to assist us in educating adult leaders on Friday October 10, 2014 at Camp Sequassen.

Wood Badge is an adult leadership course that is offered each year by the council to adult leaders in the BSA programs. This year weekend two is being held at Camp Sequassen in New Hartford, CT.

Interested youth will be instructing adult leaders on the proper way to develop a camp site and follow the Lead No Trace principles. Youth will also have lunch with the staff and participants, observe a Troop Presentation titled, Generations in Scouting and teach leaders how to solve problems in the afternoon in a "round robin" setting of games.

Youth will need to arrive at camp by 8:00 on Friday and leave camp by 4:30. Youth MUST arrange for their own transportation to and from camp. Carpooling can be arranged by the parents/guardians and the youth. You will need to attend in full Field Uniforms (aka Class-As).

We can supply each youth with a letter explaining to the appropriate parties what they will be doing on Friday should they need one to receive credit, service hours or explain their absence from school that day.

This is a GREAT opportunity for youth to interact with other adult leaders, from our council and other councils, and demonstrate to the adult participants what a great product our Scouting programs produce.

If you are interested and have your parents/guardian’s approval please contact me at:

Sincerely,

Douglas Heim, SM

Cycling Merit Badge - Ride this Sunday

Posted by Jeff Vilenski on August 27, 2014 at 6:25 AM Comments comments (0)

Troop 88 Cyclists,

We are getting close to the end of the summer and our rides. Our next bike ride toward the Cycling merit badge will be this Saturday August 30.

We will meet at the Fairfield Town Hall Annex parking lot at 8:30 a.m. - same place and time as our last ride. The plan is to repeat last week's 25 mile ride to Westport and back. So please remember to bring a permission slip, which is attached, and a water bottle. Also bring some money as we’ll stop at Elvira’s for a quick break. We should be back by noon.

Please reply to Mr. Magnusson - pgmagnuss@gmail.com - that you can ride, especially an adult as we need a second adult to ride along.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate again and we'll have another good day of riding.

We also need to plan the final 50 mile ride. Right now it looks like either Sat or Sun Sept 27 or 28 are the best option for several of us. Let me know if either or both are available for you. As previously mentioned we will also need a couple of "sag wagons" - these are parents in their cars who can ferry snacks and lunch to the various rest stops during our ride - this has been a big help for past rides. I've had a couple of volunteers and could use a couple more. Let Mr. Magnusson know if you'd be willing to drive a "sag wagon". He will give directions to those who can help.

Let me remind you that if you've missed any rides to date you can do rides on your own - just keep a log of when and where you rode and the mileage.

YIS

Mr. Magnusson

Cycling Merit Badge - Ride this Sunday

Posted by Jeff Vilenski on August 21, 2014 at 11:50 PM Comments comments (0)

Our next bike ride toward the Cycling merit badge will be this SUNDAY August 24.

We will meet at a NEW LOCATION - Fairfield Town Hall Annex parking lot at 8:30AM - same time as in the past. The plan is to complete our first 25 mile ride to Westport and back. So please remember to bring a permission slip, which is attached, and a water bottle. You might also want to bring some money as we’ll stop at Elvira’s for a quick break. We should be back by noon.

Please reply to Mr. Magnusson - pgmagnuss@gmail.com - that you can ride, especially an adult as we need a second adult to ride along. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we'll have another good day of riding.

To help with your planning our next ride will be another 25 miler next SATURDAY Aug 30 - again we'll meet at the Town Hall Annex.

As for the 50 miler we will have to take a poll of what weekend can work for scouts. I nominate either Sept 13 or 14 or the following weekend for the ride. We will also need a couple of "sag wagons" - these are parents in their cars who can ferry snacks and lunch to the various rest stops during our ride - this has been a big help for past rides.

Let Mr. Magnusson know your date preference and if you'd be willing to drive a "sag wagon". He will give directions to those who can help.

Keep in mind that if you've missed any rides to date you can do rides on your own - just keep a log of when and where you rode and the mileage.

Cycling Merit Badge, August 6

Troop 88 Cyclists

To make up for our missed ride on Saturday due to the rain our next ride toward the Cycling merit badge is planned for this Wed Aug 6. It looks like we have enough interest and adult coverage so as long as mother nature cooperates we will ride. We will meet at 5:30 at the main Ludlowe Middle School parking lot on Unquowa Rd. We should be back by 7:45. Please have a permission slip for each scout. In addition have a water bottle and your helmet. You should bring some money too as we will stop for a quick break. This is a fair weather event so if it’s raining – which it may - we will not be riding. It would help to confirm that you can attend to Mr. Magnusson at pgmagnuss@gmail.com
